2.1 Software Installation
2.1.1 Video for Windows Runtime Installation
The fact that you are reading this file means you have the Reel-Clips CD-ROM
in your drive and it is functioning correctly.
With Windows loaded click on the File Menu and Select "Run" type
"D:\INSTALL\SETUP" in the Command Line field (This assumes that your CD ROM drive
is D:, if not use the drive letter applicable to your system) then click "OK".
Video for Windows Runtime will install on your hard drive.
2.1.2 Using Video for Windows Runtime
The Media Player in your Accessories Group is now ready to play Video for
Windows clips. Double click on the Media Player and select Video for Windows from
the device menu, Select directory from the table of contents then select a clip
and click on the play button to begin viewing the clip, if you are using a
Windows compatible sound card adjust your volume for a comfortable level.
The controls on the Media Player work just like a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR).
2.1.3 Video for Windows Runtime Licensing Information
Video for Windows Runtime 1.0 is provided to you, the end user for your
exclusive use, you may not redistribute it in any form.
3.1 Using Reel-Clips Selections
3.1.1 Integrating Reel-Clips Selections into other Windows Applications
This disk contains almost everything you'll need to use
software-based video on your own computer without any digitizing
boards or other special video hardware. However, to get the full
benefit of digital video, we strongly recommend a sound card (MPC-
or Windows-compatible) and a 256-color monitor and video display
adapter.
Setup has installed and created a program group that includes an enhanced Media
Player that makes video playback easy.
To see how easy it is to integrate video into your existing
Windows-based applications, follow these steps:
1. Double-click the Media Player icon.
2. Open a video file (*.AVI).
3. From the Media Player Edit menu, choose Select Copy Object.
4. Open another document (e.g. word-processing, spreadsheet, etc)
and go to the location to insert the video clip.
5. Paste the video clip from the clipboard. (Most often, you can
use the Paste or Paste Special command from the Edit menu.)
Video appears in your application as any other graphic until you
double-click it for the impact that only video can offer.
Experiment with it in your own applications. Then visit your
nearest software reseller to get the Microsoft Video for Windows
full packaged product and put your ideas in motion.
You can copy and paste video sequences from the Clipboard to use
video where you need the impact or clarity, effectively turning
your business communications from ideas into action. Video in a
presentation graphics program such as Microsoft PowerPoint is only
a beginning. Any time you need to clearly convey complex ideas,
processes, or concepts-such as how cost flow analysis assumptions
relate to a particular manufacturing process-you can now show what
can't easily be explained. Just use object linking and embedding
(OLE) to drop video clips into word processing documents,
spreadsheets or other forms of communication and tell the whole
story quickly and easily. And since digital video is easy to copy
and paste, the more people you need to explain your ideas to, the
more of a time-saver video becomes.
3.1.2 Optimizing Playback
Improving Performance of Audio and Video Playback
Reel-Clips has been prepared to play with on a computer system equipped with
base-level multimedia components. If you encounter quality problems when playing
Reel-Clips, the following tips are offered to troubleshoot and improve playback
on your system.
Audio Tips
* No sound - install an audio-card and Windows-compatible driver
in your computer system.
* Still no sound - check the speaker-cable connections and
adjust the audio-card volume control to the mid-range position.
* Background static noise from speakers - move speaker cables
away from the computer power supply. Or, lower the audio-card
volume control and use an external amplifier if you need more
volume.
* Tinny sound produced by the internal PC speaker - Use external
speakers. The PC speaker isn't designed for high-quality sound
reproduction.
Video Tips
* Jerky video motion or discontinuous audio during playback - If
you have sufficient space copy the clip to your hard disk
to improve performance. If the video clip already is on a hard
disk, defragmenting the disk will improve performance. Disk
defragmentation utilities, such as Norton's SpeedDisk, are
available at most computer stores.
3.1.3 License usage of Reel-Clips Selections
The license for usage of Reel-Clips is a Royalty Free License, you may use
any clip in this collection for any reason, either commercial or non-commercial
with no fee or royalty due, however you MAY NOT use these clips as part of
another compilation of Video Clips that would compete or may compete with Reel-
Clips as a commercial product.
The following is the complete license agreement:
SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT
GRANT OF RIGHTS: Infotech grants you the right to use Reel-Clips without
royalty for any personal or commercial use. Provided, however, you may not
include these materials as a part of another compilation of computer video files
or any product that may be construed by Infotech as a competitive product of Reel-
Clips, without having first obtained the written permission of Infotech at Post
Office Box 471113, Charlotte, North Carolina 28247.
LIMITED WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: This software is licensed AS
IS. If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the software, return the product
package, with proof of purchase, to your reseller within ninety (90) days of the
date of purchase for a full refund. If any materials or media in this package
are defective, return them to Infotech within ninety (90) days of the date of
purchase, and they will be replaced at no charge.
These warranties are in lieu of other warranties, express or implied,
including the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular
purpose. In no event will Infotech be liable to you for damages, including the
loss of profits, lost savings, or other incidental or consequential damages rising
out of your use of or inability to use the software, even if Infotech or an
authorized Infotech representative has been advised of the possibility of such
damages.
Some jurisdictions do not allow excluding or limiting implied warranties or
limiting liability for incidental or consequential damages, and some
jurisdictions have special statutory consumer protection provisions that may
supersede this limitation. As a result, this limitation of liability may not
apply to you if prohibited by the laws of your jurisdiction.
If any provision of this agreement is found to be unlawful, void, or
unenforceable, then that provision shall be severed from this agreement and will
not affect the validity and enforceability of the remaining provisions. This
agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina.
4.1 Troubleshooting Guide
4.1.1 Problems with Playback Speed
90% of all reported playback speed problems can be attributed to one of the
following 1. Poor file transfer speed of your CD-ROM Drive, or 2. Background or
TSR programs interfering with processor speed.
To determine if your CD-ROM transfer speed is the problem do the following:
Free up enough space on your hard drive to copy the smallest clip (try
CUTPAPER.AVI) to your hard drive and try playing the clip from the hard drive.
If this does not help then you should make sure no other programs or TSR's
are running.
If neither of these helps contact your local computer dealer and try and
determine the component that is causing the slowdown.
4.1.2 Problems playing files in the BIGCLIPS Directory
These clips are included for systems with 486/33 (or faster) processors and
a computer system that has a fast data throughput. Video from these files will
probably be jerky on slower systems.
4.1.3 Video Problems
If the Reel-Clips play but don't look correct or a portion of the frame is
only being displayed make sure you have the Windows video driver installed for
your brand of VGA/SVGA Card.
